RAF Wittering Airfield Use and Impact on Gliding by 4Cs

You will be aware, or have heard, that various agencies associated with Wittering have plans to use the airfield area for non-aviation activities, and some of these will affect 4Cs activities. The Stn has been very supportive of the Club, and are eager that the Club gets a high priority on airfield area use, but it is not possible for us to have sole use. While the Stn has expressed some concerns about the safety of some concurrent activities, slight modification of our flying patterns slightly when some non-aviation events are taking place means that concurrent operations is possible. However, there is one weekend (5/6 May) where the whole airfield area will be used, and it will not be possible for any gliding (or anything else) to take place at the same time.

The complete list (at 16 Apr 12) of non-aviation activities taking place, and the modifications to operations, on the airfield area is as follows:

Thu 19 Apr 12 – JAVELIN Track Day using the tarmac areas around ALPHA South. No issue for gliders.

Sat 21/Sun 22 Apr 12 – Model Flying event on Delta North. Model aircraft will not operate above 200ft, and Stn has asked that gliders overflying DELTA North are above 600ft.

Sat 28/Sun 29 Apr 12 – Jet model flying using DELTA North and the northern taxiway. Stn has advised that they are content for gliding and model flying to take place concurrently, but some details are still awaited - will be announced separately.

Fri 4 to Sun 6 May 12 (incl) – Track event involving whole airfield area. No gliding possible. I am content to consider applications for qualified pilots to relocate aircraft to other gliding sites so they may fly.

Sat 19 May 12 – Model Flying event on Delta North. Model aircraft will not operate above 200ft, and Stn has asked that gliders overflying DELTA North are above 600ft.

Sat 26 May 12 – JAVELIN Track Day using the northern taxiway and the northern side of the main runway. Gliders not to land on any of the northern grass areas or the main runway. In addition, not to overfly the northern taxiway below 500ft.

Sat 2 Jun 12 – JAVELIN Track Day using the tarmac area around ALPHA South. No aerotowing, and no glider landings on the main runway to east of ALPHA South. In a westerly wind, gliders not to overfly the ‘Ramp’ taxiway below 500ft – ‘long landings’ to be the norm.

Thu 7/Fri 8 Jun 12 – Preparation for the Stn Families Day. No gliding. Stn has asked whether we would wish to put on a ground exhibit at the event.

Sat 23/Sun 24 Jun 12 – Model Flying event on Delta North. Model aircraft will not operate above 200ft, and Stn has asked that gliders overflying DELTA North are above 600ft.

Sat 21/Sun 22 Jul 12 – Model Flying event on Delta North. Model aircraft will not operate above 200ft, and Stn has asked that gliders overflying DELTA North are above 600ft.

I well understand that some will feel that no restriction on our activities is acceptable. However, we need to work with the Stn and others to ensure that concurrent activities can proceed safety, and I would ask that Duty Instructors to ensure that the modifications to our flying patterns (outlined above) are followed. A fuller list will be placed on the Launchpoint caravan.

Subject to the weather, and sufficient people to operate (the call is out for numbers/names - there are 4 confirmed currently), yes.

I now have details of the coordination required between the gliders and the model jet flying event on 28 and 29 Apr. Please note that this could be seen as a direct parallel to the Club’s possible operation should powered aircraft fly from Wittering in the future.

Simply, all glider circuits are to be to the south of Wittering. The model jets will fly at to the north of the airfield area up to 1500ft at speeds of around 200kts. A ‘glass wall’ will exist down the Main Runway which neither party must cross: the main runway is out of bounds for landings by anyone. In a westerly wind, model jets will operate from the DELTA North, and no gliders should fly below 2000ft within 2NMs of the pan. In an easterly wind, the model jets will fly from the Northern Taxiway in the area of the Caravan Park, and gliders should not fly below 2000ft within 2NMs of the Park. Local liaison on the day to be undertaken.

The ‘glass wall’ plot works well between gliding and powered aircraft at other flying sites (eg Halton and Cranwell), so this is a known method of operating. I understand that the organisers of the model event is expecting around 75 participants.

On a side issue, which will have no impact on Club flying, is a fixed-line model flying event on Pan 19 (near the ATC Tower) to a height of 25ft to the south of the airfield area perimeter road.
