What if we move an 80 mm into the free space, and use the 80 mm spot on the right for the radio. Will it matter if the radio is covered for lengthy periods on a comp flight? Only asking because the antenna lead was on the right hand side behind the panel.

If we did that, how about putting the ASI where the mech vario is, and the vario in the free space.

I agree with Sam, but with the other option of putting the altimeter and not the mech vario in the place that may be obscured- when you are XC it is pretty much out of use anyway due to the unlevel terrain that unless you have consulted a map to work out you will be estimating height AGL anyway.

I've tried to take as much on board as possible, so here's the latest combination. The Alt is now on the right which could be obscured by a PDA. There should still be room for a radio in the middle.

Looks good. Might even be worth squeezing the compass in the left so the radio is fine for space. Obviously you can work that out when you have all the kit to lay on the panel blank so you get it all lined up etc.

id rather partially cover the mech vario tbh..... provided you intend to do a good job on all the electrics.....

I think that the compass might have to stay where it is. I can't get it into the main body of the panel because the mounting screws are in the way. If I did try to squeeze them together I don't think that there would be enough space between the instruments to screw them on properly

I think the LX and mech vario should be transposed, as you will be looking at that more than any other instrument. The compass should be higher up as where you have it any movement of the stick will alter the reading.

Here are 2 more options. The first simply swaps the LX and mech vario and pushes the compass up a bit.

The second is a layout with all of the instruments on the main panel which I think might just about fit. Then there should also be some room for the radio.

Here is one more arrangement which has all the instruments in the main body of the panel with room for a radio below. Although, I'm not entirely sure at this point if the spacing between the instruments is large enough.

Colin - Can you tell me which of these combinations you think would work the best? Then I can draw the arrangement on the graph paper. Would it be possible to cut the holes this weekend? I would really like to get the 15 flying for some of the week if possible. I will be going over on Friday because I've heard that there might be some flying due to the Portmoak crowd coming back early, so the panel will be there whenever you have the time.
