I don't suppose that the RAF will ground us all to save us from the possibility of having to fly without engines if we ingest volcanic ash?, i mean that would be silly really. Except at Cranwell of course.

From the BGA website:

"Uncontrolled airspace is unaffected by the restrictions. However, until the issue has passed, a greater intensity of airborne traffic can be expected outside controlled airspace, including by business jet aircraft."

The restriction only applies to IFR traffic - VFR can use airspace as normal, but without any guarantees as to ATC service.
