Also note that the Sibson Parachute zone is just to the South of the Airfield.
Wittering is easy to get to by road, conveniently placed just South of Stamford on the A1.
Coming from the South...
...up the A1 northbound, past Peterborough you will see signs for Wittering village. Continue past these and immediately on the left will be the turning for RAF Wittering. If you see the airfield on the left, you have missed the entrance and have gone too far. Don't worry if you miss the turning, just continue up to the Burghley roundabout and come back down the A1 Southbound.Coming from the North...
...down the A1 southbound, after Stamford you will come acros the Burghley Roundabout. Continue down the A1 for about a mile and then you will see RAF Wittering on the right. Here you have two choices; cross the A1 and perform a U-Turn, or continue down to the next junction to come back up northbound. If you choose to cross the A1, then change into the right hand lane and be prepared to slow down for the filter lane that appears on the right. This will be marked by a sign to Wittering village. Be careful here as you must cross the other carriageway to reach the turning. Once across, perform a U-turn in the junction and rejoin the A1 travelling North. Almost immediately you will reach the RAF Wittering turning on the left.Alternatively you can travel on down the A1 past the Wittering turn, to the A47 junction, about a mile further south. Here you can leave the carriageway, cross over and rejoin the A1 travelling north. After this simply follow the instructions above for coming from the south.
Getting onto the Station...
Once you have turned off the A1, park in the car park in front of the Camp Entrance. As RAF Wittering is an active military base, everyone who enters the camp must be booked in at the Main Guardroom at the entrance before attempting to enter the camp. Service personnel should be allowed on with the passes they already possess, but a car pass is also needed and non-Wittering personnel should check whether or not their passes are acceptable on the Station. If in doubt check in with the Guardroom.Civilians eligible for Membership will definitely need to book in with the guardroom, and will require some form of ID such as a Passport or Photo Driving Licence, plus their car registration. On your first visit your photo will be taken and a Temporary Personal Pass and a Temporary Car Pass printed. This pass will only last you a few days and it is likely you will have to get another the next time you visit. Fortunately they will keep your photo so it will be easier.
If you find you enjoy Gliding and feel you want to become a regular member, we can look into getting a permanent Gliding Club pass, (if you do not already have a Service Pass) to avoid having to book in every weekend.
Getting to the Club...
The Gliding Club is based on Pan 22 Charlie South, at the other end of the airfield from the Main Camp entrance.
Upon entering the camp go across the first roundabout. Further along this road there will be a second roundabout, with 2 Hangar in front of you. Turn left here and follow the road to a T-Junction, then turn right, onto the main perimeter road. Follow this road, crossing a Harrier runway, and passing the control Tower and Fire Section. When you pass a farm on the left, take the next left turn on to Pan 22, and head for large metal Hangar. Thats the Gliding Club.
If the day is a flying day, however, there will not always be people at the Hangar. Instead we will all likely be at the Launchpoint flying. The Launchpoint can be in one of two places, depending on the wind direction, and if you see that we are flying, just come out and see us.
Launchpoint 1...
(see diagram)When you get to Pan 22, you should be able to see a large yellow bus, further up towards the very Westernmost end of the Airfield. There should also be a red and white caravan type vehicle, assorted tractors and of course, Gliders! Unfortunately we are not allowed cars on the airfield, due to the risk of FOD, so you will have to walk out to the Launchpoint, but it isn't far. Simply park up by the Hangar and Portacabin, and take a stroll over, always looking out for gliders that may be landing.
Launchpoint 2...
(see diagram)Before you reach Pan 22 you should be able to see if we are at this Launchpoint. When crossing the Harrier runway you should again see the yellow Bus etc. just forward of the 'Ski Ramp'. The best place to park in this situation is in the car park of the Fire Section, about a hundred yards on from the Harrier Runway, and then it is a short walk to the Launchpoint, again looking out for Gliders that may be landing.
Clubhouse...
(see diagram)If there is no flying on the airfield, and no people at the Hangar, then there may be people up at the Clubhouse. This is one dispersal pan up from where the Hangar is. Simply continue on up the road that goes past the Hangar. You should cross another Harrier runway, then after a short distance take a left turn, following signs for 5131 Bomb Disposal. Further down this road take the second left and you should see a H shaped Portakabin building ahead and to the right, with car parking spaces outside.
